Insert smart chips in Google Docs

You can put smart chips in your Google Doc to add details about:
  • Names of users users with Gmail or Workspace email addresses
  • Other Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides files
  • Dates or Google Calendar events
  • Places and map directions

You and the document collaborators can hover or click on a smart chip in your document to get more information.

You can also insert placeholder chips, time trackers, and dropdowns, and use building blocks to track projects, files, and more.

Add smart chips for people, files, dates & checklists

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app Docs.
  2. In the document, type: @
  3. Select from the list of suggestions or, to find a smart chip, enter letters, numbers, or symbols.
    • To add a people smart chip, start typing the name or email address of the person you want, or type @me to add yourself.
    • To add a file smart chip, enter the file name or related keywords.
  4. To insert a chip, tap on it.

Create & edit date chips

Add a date chip

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app Docs.
  2. To add a date chip, type:
    • @today
    • @tomorrow
    • @yesterday
    • @date
    • A specific date like @Jan or @1/1/2021
    • A relative date like @monday, @next tuesday, or @last wednesday
  3. Tap on the chip to add it to your document.

Edit a date chip

  1. Tap the date chip and then tap [Editing pencil icon]
  2. Edit the date.
  3. Tap OK.

Tips:

  • Date chips appear the same to collaborators in all time zones.
  • To know how far the date is relative to your time zone, tap the date chip.
Create checklist chips
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app Docs.
  2. Type: @.
  3. Scroll to “Lists.”
  4. Select Checklist.
Add a dropdown menu
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app Docs.
  2. Type: @
  3. Scroll down and tap Dropdown.
    1. To insert a pre-configured drop down: Scroll down to find options and tap on the one you want.
    2. To build a dropdown:
      1. Tap New dropdown.
      2. Enter a name and the color and text for each option.
      3. Tap Save.
