Get started with Gemini in Sheets
Note: This feature is still rolling out and may not be available to you.
Important: This feature works best with native Google Sheets files. To use Gemini features in an Excel file (.xlsx), select File Save as Google Sheets.
To use Gemini in Sheets on your mobile device:
- You need an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.
- You need a device running Android 10 or higher.
- You need to sign into Google Sheets.
Start a conversation
- On your Android device, open the Google Sheets app.
- At the top right, tap Open Gemini
.
- In the prompt box, enter your question or request.
- Optional: Tap a suggestion, like Summarize this spreadsheet or Analyze for insights.
- You can continue the conversation to ask follow up questions or provide more instructions.

Things to ask Gemini in Sheets
While Gemini can help you analyze and visualize data on your mobile device, it currently cannot directly edit or format your spreadsheet. Actions like formatting cells, adding rows or columns, and creating pivot tables are only available when using Gemini in Sheets on your computer.
Summarize spreadsheet with GeminiWhen you open a spreadsheet that has data, you can ask for a recap in the side panel.
- To get the breakdown, ask Gemini for a summary or tap Summarize this spreadsheet.
- To send feedback about the suggested text, tap Good suggestion
or Bad suggestion
.
You can also ask Gemini to help you understand your spreadsheet better. Here are examples you can use:
- “What are the key takeaways from this report?”
- “Explain this spreadsheet like I'm 5 years old.”
Generate and insert data visualizations right in your spreadsheet. You can also ask Gemini to create images to match your chart or graph.
- On your mobile device, open a spreadsheet from Google Sheets.
- At the top right, tap Ask Gemini
.
- In the side panel, give Gemini instructions with references from your sheet or generic cell names. Examples of prompts:
- "Create a chart with date on the x-axis and total on the y-axis."
- "Make a line chart."
- "Based on Column 4, create a graph that shows the percentage of expenses on the total stipend after tax."
- "Make a chart analyzing my expenses for the month."
- To add the generated chart to drive, tap Add to Drive
.
- Edit file name and select the Drive location.
- Tap Upload.
Tip: The generated chart doesn't link or respond to changes in the original data set that was used to generate it.
You can use Gemini to answer questions about the data in your sheet. Ask for trends, patterns, key takeaways, or predictions based on your data.
- On your device, open a spreadsheet from Google Sheets.
- At the top right, tap Ask Gemini
.
- In the side panel, give Gemini instructions with references from your sheet or generic cell names, or tap suggestion Analyze for insights. Examples of prompts:
- "Identify trends in this table."
- "How can I show regression and prediction of this data?"
- "What analysis can you help me perform with this sheet?"
- "Help me understand month-to-month food prices."

Collaborate with Gemini on shared or external spreadsheets
You might see a message in the side panel that says, "Warning: Content added by Gemini may be visible to users outside your domain. Use caution with prompts and before enabling search settings." This message means one of the following:
- The file has an out-of-domain user with view or edit permissions.
- The file was created by an out-of-domain user. The file will remain to be classified as "externally accessible" even if the original author(s) removed themselves from the access list.
